At a public meeting held on September 18th, Brook Bench, Director of Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers- Omaha District and Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, provided attendees with an update on the improvements being constructed at Lake Cunningham. The nearly 6-mile recreational trail, campground improvements, new campground construction, fencing and nature trail are currently under construction. Click HERE to view the posters that were presented at the meeting and provide some pictures of the construction activities that are occurring. Mr. Bench shared that construction activities will continue through next year.

Roger Kuhn, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, also provided an update on the drawdown of the lake. He shared that the State believes that the zebra mussels have been killed after their exposure to last winters cold and harsh conditions. Concerning treatment for nuisance fish species, he stated that Lonergan Lake was completed earlier this year and State personnel recently completed treatment at Cunningham Lake on September 18th and 19th. The State will begin restocking Cunningham Lake with game fish next year, after the lake is allowed to refill on June 1, 2020.

The reopening of the park will depend on progress, the Parks and Recreation Department want to ensure public safety and allow construction to be completed. Mr. Bench shared at the meeting that he thinks it'll be at least until next fall before reopening. We appreciate the public's understanding on this project and look forward to all the positive changes being made.
